Thirdspace is the design and research studio of Carson Booth and Mark Heller
The studio derives its name from a concept articulated by Slavoj Zizek at the 2009 ‘Lacanian Ink 33 Event’:
Between all divisions (inside/outside, process/product, object/representation) there is a ‘thirdspace’: the unspoken but ultimately essential interstitial zone of production, maintenance, management, and waste disposal. In most forms of production and representation, this space is denied. We know it is there but we do not accept it’s existence.
The work of Thirdspace Studio operates within this discarded, denied interstitial zone.
The studio is interested in producing:
Forms of representation, focused on process rather than product.
Systems of ownership, mediated on non-human relationships rather than static legal constructs.
Structures of data, bridging gaps in representation and distribution.

Our current projects and research focuses include
- A plant that can draw itself.
-
A garden that owns itself and directs its own maintenance.
-
A mountain that responds to sensed geologic processes.
- Representation of near real time LANCE data.
